The foregoing remark from Mill’s essay on liberty makes the focus of our investigation in this study quite explicit. It is evident that for J.S. Mill, the principle of altruism, like every other ethical rule, has its ultimate foundation in the realm of utility. Therefore, by the time we conclude this enquiry, we should be able to assess the worth of this claim.
