It is a national embarrassment that Yakubu Mamoud, a professor of political science, the infamous supervisor of a largely discredited 2023 presidential election, has been nominated for an ambassodorial posting by the beneficiary of his so- called technical glitch that prevented results of a presidential election from being uploaded, real time, as INEC repeatedly promised, nationally and internationally, an exercise for which a humongous sum of N309b was appropriated by the country’s National Assembly.and appropriately released. It is tragic for the soul of a nation if an electoral umpire can finish overseeing an election today and become an appointee of the same administration his Election Commission has brought to life tomorrow. Then, the line between neutrality and political loyalty becomes blurred
And once we arrive at a junction, where trust in people overseeing public institutions are destroyed, a country dies.
Yakubu Mamoud does not need to further deficate on the professorial chair he sat on, and from where he was invited to guide and guard our democratic journey as a Country. I am, indeed, personally ashamed for this nomination, and I am hoping that he would summon the small dose of decency remaining in his conscious being and reject it
As my Yoruba people in their collective wisdom would suggest: won npe e l’ole, o ngbe Omo eran jo, loosely interpreted to mean, when you are being called a thief, rightly or wrongly, you do not go about cuddling a goat
