OF DEATH, BURIAL AND EGOTISM OF THE LIVING: A PERSONAL REFLECTION AND SUBMISSION

We come into this world naked, albeit without our individual consent, but by the desire of biological bearers who essentially are driven by need for self-actualization as is often propelled by family expectation of lineage perpetuation. At least in Africa and specifically amongst the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria, married couples strive to bear children due more in obedience to family expectation – ‘family’ here being extended family members – beyond the need of the couple. Marriage in Yorubaland among Yoruba people is seen more as a vessel through which a family lineage is perpetuated, precisely why the male-child is considered of premium value.
