Me: This statement, though from a leading member of an opposition party who, normally, should be pained by the gale of opportunistic and cowardly defection of fellow governors and one- time compatriots from his party, that is being daily deflated, speaks, rather candidly and eloquently, to our common humanity, giving hope that Nigeria may not, after all, arrive at the desert of dictatorship through an engendered One-Party state by a power monger of a president.
Truth is, this threat- induced defection, anchored on regional solidarity, pointedly reflect a psychology of fear and desperation by one who, a season ago, was so sure- footed that he has rendered every viable opposion party to a state of suspended animation, to the extent that non, especially the leading opposion party, the PDP, would not be a serious form and shape to present candidates for elections in 2027.
I can only hope that Governor Seyi Makinde would be able to remain steadfast and remain a vanguard of a spirited effort to save the polity from further degeneration into the cesspit of despotism in the hands of a rapacious power- mongering cabal, masquerading as a regional defender. Point is, as a 2nd-Term Governor, and not eligible for re-election into the same executive office, he can only live for a legacy of honour. He has nothing to lose, except his self-esteem as a Captain who abandoned a ship when there remained an opportunity to salvage a once formidable ocean liner from sinking, if….We wait, we watch
